Testing: All applicants must complete either the College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the test of the American College Program (ACT) and arrange to have official test scores sent to Duke. You can submit scores for the ACT, including the writing exam, or the three-part SAT Reasoning Test and two SAT Subject Tests. We will consider your highest individual scores, regardless of when you took the test. If you apply to the Pratt School of Engineering, you must take one SAT Subject Test in mathematics. You do not need to rush-report your scores to us.
Deadlines: All deadlines are on-line submission deadlines or postmark deadlines (if you mail a paper application to us).
Forms: Your application for admission is divided into distinct parts, based on the type of information you're asked to provide. For example, the first type of information we need from you is your personal data, which is required to open your application file. This information is collected on the Student Supplement (Form A), which you can submit before or with the Common Application. If you call our office to verify whether we've received the different parts of your application, you'll find that we refer to these forms as a way to distinguish the distinct information we need.
Essay Tips: The essay gives you an opportunity to present yourself and your ideas to the Admissions Committee, while it helps us understand you as an individual. It is important that you write from the heart in your own voice, because how you think and express yourself helps us learn more about your personal and intellectual interests.
Missing Information: Your application is considered complete once we receive all the required information on the application forms. This includes your personal information, personal statement with essay, secondary school report with transcript and counselor recommendation, teacher recommendation(s), and testing information. In addition, an optional artistic material form is available if you'd like to submit artistic material to be reviewed by the appropriate department at Duke. If your file is missing any required material, we will contact you by e-mail by November 15 if you are an Early Decision applicant, or by February 15 if you are a Regular Decision applicant.
Calling our Office: After you have checked to make sure that any missing parts of your application have been sent to us - and you have allowed enough time for us to receive and file them - you can call our office to make sure we have received the information. Beginning November 15 for Early Decision applicants and February 2 for Regular Decision applicants, you can call our office between 3:00 and 5:00 Eastern time Monday through Friday.
Changing Your Mind: We understand that you might change your mind about a number of things during the application process, and we ask that you submit all application changes in writing. For example:
